Breezing through the Mounts: A fascinating Experience!

It was a fascinating experience to visit the cool valley of Rohtang, some 45 kms from the famous summer tourist spot ‘Manali’ in Himachal Pradesh. The Rohtang jot was all agog with fun and frolic as the summer tourists, mostly honeymooners flooded the place. I was sitting on the edge of a big rock near the river ‘Beas’, when the driver, a young Ladhakhi said, “Sir, the current of the river is strong, be careful.” I snapped as I was lost some where in city life which I had long parted with. The scene was breathtaking with icy cold waters falling into the river below the bridge making a strange cacophony.

The rocks on both the sides of the river were over grown with wild moss and the paths between the rocks were sprinkled with small purple periwinkle flowers. A wild growth of bushes was phenomenal and the wild grass grew between the huge boulders giving the view a soothing effect to the passersby’s.

A few shepherds with huge flocks of sheep lay on lush green grounds, just relaxing while the sheep ate and drank to their fill. Perhaps they were ascending towards the greater heights of Himalayas, the Ladhak, as it is their routine to serpent their ways towards steep heights of mountains in search of greener pastures for the fold.

The stunning beauty of the place had mesmerized me and it took a long time before I could picturise the dazzling forms of rocks and the wind blown trees of Chinars and Pines on the canvas of my inner memory.

The driver reminded me of forward journey we had to undertake when I jostled and shook myself. The huge mountain rock on which the jot flag is fixed read, ‘OM’, just one letter, again and again, which made me thoughtless!
