Touch

Touch as if the centre of your being has shifted to the point of contact. Oh! I just experienced this.

I had been off to my other’s place for 2 days. My 3 year old niece is the apple of our eye. I had heard that children till the age of 4 are the purest and the most alive of beings. To see it in real, she set an example.

My niece has this peculiar habit of feeling the elbows of any loved one who happens to sit near her. At night, she has to hold and touch her mother’s arm. She’s always commenting how her mami’s arm is the best. Then, she likes her mother’s and mine stands third. We would endlessly laugh away over her behavior.

Just yesterday, as I sat by watching her being fed by my mom, I noticed something very peculiar. My mother was completely absorbed in feeding her lovingly. My niece, on the other hand, sat eating and touching her arm.

The movement of her hands expressed great love. It was as if she was feeling ‘how a loved one feels to touch!’ I wondered whether I had ever touched someone so lovingly. All her senses seemed to focus on her palm and the bare skin that came in contact with it.

Only if we too could love so dearly, our relationships would be so more beautiful.

I remember, how she dwells in my laughter, my smile, my feel, my smell, my touch…everything about me. because, she loves me.

To add as a ‘re-minder’, when I got back, I noticed something similar. As my sister-in-law fed my 2 year old nephew, he was engaged in feeling her arms, her face…it was astonishing.

Simple love, simple happiness. Why do we forget to touch?
