Turtles carry salmonella
Selling turtles in the Unites States has been prohibited since 1975 because they carry salmonella. The Center for Disease Control has reported that “no reliable methods are available to guarantee that a turtle is free of salmonella”. Salmonella is a nasty illness anyone who has been infected with salmonella can attest to that. In fact recently a Florida infant died from salmonella she caught from a pet turtle.
I would not recommend keeping a turtle as a pet. Turtles don’t do well in captivity and the risk of developing salmonella from turtles is high.
If you want a aquatic pet I would recommend getting a gold fish because they don’t have the dangerous jaws that turtles have and gold fish wont make you sick.
