Be Careful When Someone Offers You Big Money

One day my colleague asked me to translate email she got. The lawyer from African country wrote her, that his client Peter Stastna, original Slovak, living in Africa, died and left 9 million dollars. This lawyer was looking for someone who could inherit this money and my colleague was only Stastna he had found. She was exited and repeted that she would be a millionaire. But I found out that it is fraud.

Name Peter Stastna cannot exist in our language. Peter is man’s name and only women’s names end with letter a in our country. The writer of email simply found my colleague on internet and used her last name to the story. She also noticed that she do not know any member from their family who worked in Africa and there are lot of Stastna family in our country. And what was reason of this email? If she replays for it, the lawyer would ask money for fees, but he would not send any heritage.

I have nearly forgotten this, when last week, I have got email from young man, also from African country, offering me partnership in his business. He writes very impressive email about dead of his father – cacao merchant, who was poisoned by his business partner and left to his son 7 million dollars. But for dangerous atmosphere in his country he asks me to transfer his money to my account and prepare his coming to our country. He offers me 15% from his heritage.

Husband of my close friend is from Africa, so I asked him, what does he think about that. He started to laugh. He gets huge amount of such emails with the same story, but with different names and numbers of dollars. The system is very easy: If you answer them, they start to ask money for fees, taxes and other charges, you pay, because you want your million, but you will never see one dollar from them. It is all just fiction.

Be careful, when someone offers you big money.
