The Practice of Poaching in Ancient India

It was a practice in ancient India that the noble people went off to wars as they were all physically able. Often hunting on horse-backs and elephants were planned and not only men but women too rode astride. Of course hunting was a passion and a favorite pastime then for the warrior class.

At that time there were no impositions of fines and bans on hunting and poaching as this was considered to be an act of bravery. The honorable warriors were even honoured by the kings on bringing home the skin of a leopard or any other man eater. They even used to decorate the palaces with the animal hides and priceless skulls and skeletons.

However with the changing times the laws too changed. In the recent past when poaching is considered to be illegal, most of the hunters get away with the prized possessions of hides and bones of animals and sell them at premium bargains in the international market.

For many years animals especially – tigers and elephants have been killed for their skins and organs precisely in those areas which have been turned into National parks and sanctuaries and reserves have been virtually turned into the hunting grounds for the poachers who even enjoy patronage of the jungle wardens and officials alike.

Mostly armed with ultra-modern weapons, driving latest vehicles they enter the sanctuaries without fear, supported by corrupt officials and politicians and glamorous film stars like Mr. Salman Khan(Famous cine star), Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi(famous cricketer) have been actively involved in poaching incidents.

When poachers rule the jungles with little fear, then the day is not far when all the endangered species would be no longer alive and would be probably wiped out….
