Rip tides can kill
A rip tide is a surface flow of water returning out too sea “or lake”. When waves break on the beach the water needs too return too the sea. If the returning water is channeled though a sandbar, pier or jetties a rip current can occur. Rip currents are found all over the world. Rip currents are strongest on windy days or during sever storms such as hurricanes.
Rip currents are extremely dangerous killing 100 people each year in the United States alone. One aspect that makes rip currents so dangerous is that you can not see them unless you know what your looking for. In fact lifeguards in the United States rescue approximately 18,000 people each year from rip currents.
If your ever caught in a rip current don’t fight it. Swim parallel too the beach until your out of the rip tide. Once clear of it swim too shore.
