UNO : Important Facts

• There are six official languages in the U.N. They are Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. The working languages of U.N. are English and French.
• The United Nations University is in Tokyo.
• The United Nations Library is named after Dag Hammarskjöld, the U.N. Secretary-General who was killed in an air crash. It is in New York.
• The first Asian Secretary-General of the U.N. was U. Thant (Burma).
• The Fourth World Conference on Women sponsored by the U.N. was held in Beijing in 1995. All the members of the U.N. participated in this conference.
• 1990-2000 has been designated as Decade of Natural Disaster Reduction by the U.N.
• The United Nations celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1995.
• The U.N. Security Council has instituted the Dag Hammarskjold Medal to honour U.N. Peacekeepers, civilians, who are killed in operations.
• Nirupam Sen is India's permanent representative to UN, after Vijay Nambiar.
