Leopard hunting ban lifted in Uganda
Leopard hunting ban lifted in Uganda
In an article published recently it has been reported that hunters will now be allowed to hunt leopards in Uganda after the twenty-eight year ban was removed, the Commissioner For Wildlife Conservation , Trade And Industry Mr Justus Tindigarukayo Kashagire has announced.
The lifting of the ban comes in the wake of Uganda's tourism sector being given a boost after decades of neglect, following the return to normalcy and the country's political stability.
The past decade has seen substantial development to infrastructure with more roads and somewhat decent tourist lodges appearing in proximity of game parks.
Authorities have said that hunting by tourists will only be allowed to target old leopards that are no longer active in reproduction and are therefore not contributing to the population growth of the species. It is claimed that villagers who see them as a menace to livestock, kill these leopards anyway.
Conservationists are bound to raise eyebrows at the lifting of the ban.
Its interesting to know what methods will be adopted to identify these animals and how will it all be monitored to make sure that no healthy animals will be shot in the process.
“In any case, if in this twenty first century we are going to resume hunting rare species, we may as well be scientific about it and shoot them with tranquilizers rather than lethal bullets”, Tindigarukayo said.
A true hunter will not agree to this and what is to stop profiteering individuals conniving with wrong elements in the wildlife authority to condemn healthy specimens.

This is true, but
this is how they expect to attract tourists. Rather a desperate one I think.

yes it is Padmini
This is no way to attract tourists. Wild life conservationists should protest and call a stop.
