Periyar Sanctuary:-A Measure For Measure..!

Periyar sanctuary consists of an artificially created lake of about Ten sq.miles.The entire periyar sanctuary is about 300 sq.miles and situated on the kerala side of karnataka border and also approached by the main Cochin-Madurai road.

In the periyar sanctuary you get to see wild elephants,Indian Bison,chamois(samber),barking deers and boars.Occasionally tigers,leopards and sloth bears are also seen here.

Among the rare and unique birds like horn bills other different species of water birds are fairly represented in this beautiful sanctuary.

Recently periyar sanctuary officials has started a unique project to save tigers and forest property from poachers.Following a measure for measure theory to catch the thief periyar officials recruited a group of former poachers and has trained them as protectors.

Apart from these green uniformed tiger protectors,Periyar officials has also appointed some group of daily wager women as volunteers to petrol the forest area in day time and instructed to report back immediately if thy see anything suspicious going in the jungal.

These measures are welcome step at a time when tiger population of this sanctuary are declining and clandestine activities like sandalwood smuggling,cinnamon bark theft and illegal felling of trees were causing a great loses of valuable forest property.
