CHRISTMAS TALES III

The tale of the Christmas tree

Come the Christmas season and one and all get busy with the arrangements. And the main part of it is decorating the Christmas tree. The beautifully decorated Christmas trees are indeed a delightful sight to behold. But has anyone ever wondered as to when the first Christmas tree was set up? No one can say for sure of course. But there are several stories in circulation regarding this. Even in the olden times people used to decorate and worship evergreen trees. The Germans used to worship oaks. The tradition of decorating Christmas trees might have evolved out of these.

When Christianity spread across Europe the tale of Adam and Eve was told everywhere. This tale was presented dramatically and fir trees were used to decorate the stage. Soon these trees began to find place in homes too. December 24th used to be celebrated as Adam and Eve day. On this day, people used to decorate their homes with fir trees. They used to hang apples on the branches. Later, apples were replaced by biscuits, sweets etc. after some time, some began to place lighted candles also to increase the beauty of the trees.

It is believed that it was Martin Luther King who first placed a Christmas tree made of a fir tree branch in his house. For Christians candles symbolize Jesus Christ who was ‘the light of the world.’ So candles also began to be used to decorate the Christmas trees. It was queen Victoria who ruled over England in the nineteenth century. Her husband Prince Albert was a German. It was he who started the tradition of decorated Christmas trees in England. In America, Christmas trees were introduced in the seventeenth century.
