Fertility is a sin and abortion a virtue

I have no intention to offend anybody. Recently I happened to read an interesting statistics on a website. It is on the maximum carrying capacity of our Mother Earth. With the unrestricted gallop of human population smashing the 6 billion mark, we need to introspect on the maximum possible limit that Earth can carry and support. According to the aforesaid web site, the earth can allow only 2 billion to live an American standard of life. If the standard is African, she can bear 40 billion. But everybody on the earth wants to live like an American does. So we are already too much, say more than thrice the capacity of earth. Each American needs 10.3 hectares to sustain his life. This is for producing his food grains, for grazing animals for his meat and other products, for the forest to produce wood and paper, for the sea to produce the fish and seafood, for the land to accommodate housing and infrastructure and the area of forest necessary to absorb the CO2 from our energy consumption. This measure in hectare is known as ecological footprint. Unfortunately, the available per capita ecological footprint on earth is only 1.7 ha and what we really use is 2.85 ha. Here also we have crossed the mark. That is to say we are already in debt. Then what is left to our children, grand children, grand grand children and so on? If we continue to multiply in the current fashion nothing will be left and the ‘great ecological footprint’ will stamp us down to the netherworld (pathala) as Vamana did to Mahabali! So this is a burning reality, folks! In this circumstance, is it blasphemous to say fertility is sin and abortion is virtue? Each American birth will take away 10.3 hectares from earth and each abortion would save the same. Think, and save our Mother and our children too.
