Celebration of Merry Christmas in Bangladesh, 2007

The Christian community of Bangladesh celebrates Christmas Day in the country today (Tuesday) marking the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christians use this auspicious occasion to renew their relationships with God and with their fellow humans.

Christmas begins with carols in the evening in public spaces like lobby, restaurants and lounges from this (Monday) evening to Christmas Day.

Special prayers are arranged at all churches of the country today (Tuesday). The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

The churches and its adjoining compounds are decorated with colourful lights and illuminated Xmas trees are placed with a star standing right on top.

Besides, Santa Claus distributes Christmas gifts among children; family gatherings take place and a Christmas Day feast are arranged.

President Professor Dr Iajudin Ahmed and Chief Advisor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed have greeted the people of the Christian community on the occasion.

Dr Iajuddin, in his message, said the ideal of Jesus Christ is imbued with human welfare and the glory of sacrifice and these ideals have inspired people to go to the path of truth, welfare and peace.

He said the contribution of the country’s Christian community to education and social development is highly appreciable and hoped that all the communities will continue their efforts for establishing a happy and prosperous country.

Dr Fakhruddin said the teaching and ideals of Jesus Christ can show a bright path of peace in the today’s unstable world.

“All of us would have to be careful in maintaining the glorious history of communal harmony in the country. I hope the contribution of Christian community as well as other communities will be strengthened in future,” the Chief Advisor said in his message.

Political parties including Awami League and BNP greeted the Christian community on the occasion of Christmas Day.

Awami League acting President Zillur Rahman, BNP acting chairman Saifur Rahman and BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain and former JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab in their separate messages said Jesus Christ brought to the world the message of peace and welfare.

They hoped peace and happiness will be established across the globe including Bangladesh following the ideals of Jesus Christ.

Special programmes are Christmas Children party, Christmas Carnival, Christmas Tree, Christmas lunch and dinner at Hotel Sheraton, Hotel Sonargaon and Westin Hotel.
