What Is AIDS:
? A -- Acquired ( not born with )

? I -- Immune ( body’s defense system )

? D -- Deficiency ( not working )

? S -- Syndrome ( group of signs & symptoms )

What is H I V:

? H -- Human

? I -- Immunodeficiency

? V -- Virus

HIV / AIDS: - History:

? AIDS : first case found in USA ( 1981 )
? HIV – I : first isolated in Paris ( 1983 )
? HIV : first in India – April 1986 ( in 10 prostitutes of Tamil Nadu )
? HIV – II : later in West Africa, India etc.
? HIV destroys body’s defense system ( CD4 cells ) – open to opportunistic infections

Modes of Transmission

? Unprotected Sexual Intercourse with infected persons ( Male – Female, Female – Male, Male – Male )
? Infected Blood Transfusion /Blood products, needles, syringes/other instruments

? Infected Mother to Foetus/ child

Prevent spread

? NO CURE - NO VACCINE - NO TREATMENT ( only symptomatic )

We can only prevent ourselves from this killer diseases. It is popularly said as ABC of HIV/AIDS. Lets know ABC stands for what

A- Abstain yourself from sex
B- Be faithfult to your partner
c- Use Condom.
This is the way by which one can avoid the infection. Now one new term has been entered to this and that is called as D and it stands for death. If one gets HIV/AIDs then this is the altimate. So we have to be serious about the "ABC" of HIV/AIDs or else it will open the gate for D.
