Save The Girl Child
Women education and child care has become the prime agenda globally. Celebrations are on for ‘International Women’s Year’ being celebrated all over with debates, seminars and talks pertaining to safeguarding the interests of women. But it is very sad to note that there is an all time increase in the female feticide being carried out especially in India. Today it has become an indisputable fact that the county sees that girl childs are not to be born in family.
Every year on 8th day of September we celebrate Girl Child Day but seldom do we realize the declining Child sex ratio. This is a national emergency or an epidemic which will definitely have far reaching social consequences on our society.
With the advancement of technology we have had newer gadgets which are meant to detect any kind of genetic abnormality in unborn fetus in mothers womb like hemophilia or thallassemia etc. but shockingly these machines are being used for the determination of sex of the child. Who is the real culprit? The man or the machine?
With the sex-detection techniques becoming so economical and wide-spread, in every one’s reach, there has been devastation in sex ratio. There has been a sharp decline in the child sex ratio. Sex detection and sex-selective abortions are today spreading like an infectious disease. Perhaps it is the family elders who are to blame or we can say that our society is very conservative and narrow minded.
They think of getting rid of them rather than facing with the problems of raising a girl child. The thinking behind their deadly action is a heinous crime in the eyes of God. If at all a girl child is born, despite their best efforts to ensure that this does not happen using ultra-modern techniques like ‘an ultrasound machine’ or orthodox methods like following ‘a Chinese Calendar’, the newborn baby is abandoned at the doorsteps of some charitable institution or a hospital.
This evil is not only prevalent in the women belonging to lower middle classes but it has been seen that even highly educated women have resorted to as many as six to eight abortions to ensure that they only give birth to a son. Laws are poorly implemented and inadequate. The people involved in this beastly act are: Women, Men, Medicos, Nurses, Health professionals, the Media, the Governments and above all the unalarmed and a sleeping Society in which we live today. Perhaps it is very difficult to imagine a world without women or with very few of them!
