Celebrating LOHRI !

On 13th day of January, every year we in Punjab, the north western state of India, celebrate the festival of Lohri. This festival is celebrated in a big way throughout the region. Lohri gives us more than a reason to celebrate.

Braving the freezing cold we get together and welcome the harvest season with the traditional bonfire at night and mouthwatering munchies to relish. There is a complete surrender to sweets as is to celebrations.

It is marked with the servings of a combination of til, gachak, moongfali (groundnuts), jaggary and popcorn which makes up the Prasad for the festival. There are mountains of moongfalli and popcorns, trays of gachaks and desi ghee driping bhugga on every sweet meat shop which are tempting.

And not to forget, the festival of Lohri is incomplete without the infectious beats of the dhol, bhangra, boliyan and of course the traditional chorus sung by small children. The energetic beats of dhol and the spirited voices of one and all in the bonfire sends the merriment quotient higher and higher with higher and louder the dhol beat and swirling bhangra rythms and boliyans which come alive to its enthralling beats.

Small children are seen visiting homes asking for gazak, rewari and bakshish. Similarly Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is also celebrated as a festival in Assam and is based on the same principle as Lohri – celebration of a good harvest and hence good is the priority.
