About x10
X10 is a protocol developed by an organisation of the same name that allows a homeowner to give instructions to appliances via an computer application or even a simple remote, It can make use of power line mains wiring for signaling and control or it can involve brief radio frequency signals representing digital information.
With x10 a user simply plugs a module (receiver) into a wall outlet that is then capable of receiving signals. An appliance, let's say... a lamp, for example, is then plugged into the x10 module, thus allowing the user to control the properties of the lamp and bingo you now have your first smart appliance. It is worth noting though that x10 does have it's problems, for example, it can only transmit in one direction at a time (simplex transmission) and the protocol has been known to have issues establishing a connection at times, however x10 remains the most inexpensive option for automating your home to date. Go ahead and take a look at the attached diagram to get a more comprehensive understanding of how x10 works.
