LEADING BY EXAMPLE : Top Mumbai cop takes Re 1 pay.

Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor donates his entire salary of Rs 26,000 to police welfare fund; keeps just Re 1 token amount.

On April 1, Khaja Hasan Gafoor completed a month in office as the Mumbai police commissioner.

And as is the norm, he was to receive a salary of Rs 26,000 for the month.

But Gafoor ensured his account was credited by Re 1, while the rest was donated to the Mumbai Police Welfare Fund. In fact, the donation is the norm for Gafoor.

‘Gafoor has a clean image’

The tall man with ascetic looks, a 1974 batch IPS officer, Gafoor been donating his salary and receiving a token amount of Re 1 instead, for many, many years.

When asked to confirm this, Gafoor quietly told us that it was a very personal matter and he did not want to share it with the media.

However, when pushed, he grudgingly conceded, “Yes, I have been donating my salary to the Mumbai Police Welfare Fund for many years. But I do not want to share my reasons with the media; it’s just too personal.”

The Welfare Fund works finances medical aid, loans, insurance etc for the police.

And then comes the obvious question — how does he run his home? It’s easy enough if you have a supportive wife.

Gafoor’s wife, Sanam, who is a teacher at Cathedral and John Connon School, Fort, said, “My husband has never discussed his salary with me, and I have never questioned him about it.

He has been fulfilling the family needs, so I never really had to. And running the house is never a problem, because we maintain a very low profile.” The couple have a 18-year-old daughter in Std XII.

And there is another addendum to the family income.

The Gafoors are a Nawabi family from Hyderabad and has ancestral properties there and in Lucknow.

Gafoor’s subordinates were more forthcoming. “He has an extremely clean image. He has a very low profile and has hardly ever been embroiled in a controversy,” said an officer from the Police Commissioner’s office.

Gafoor has worked as director (security) for Air India, superintendent of police in Nashik and additional commissioner of police (traffic) and a DCP in the early 1990s in Mumbai.

He was posted as additional Director General Anti Corruption Bureau.
